Bronze, Gold or Pearl: Picking a Highlighter Shade for Your Undertone

Warm gold-bronze highlighter shade on deep skin undertone

If your highlighter looks like a grey smear instead of a glow, it's probably not the formula and it's not your technique. It's the shade, and on deep skin, "gold" and "gold" are not interchangeable the way they can be on lighter tones.

Bronze, gold, and pearl all read completely differently depending on your undertone. Here's how to tell which one is actually yours, in under a minute.

Why highlighter shade matters more on deep skin than on lighter skin

On fair skin, almost any shimmer shows up as "a glow" because there's so much contrast between the shimmer and the surrounding skin. On deep skin, the highlighter is competing with your own pigment, so an undertone mismatch doesn't just look slightly off, it can wash the whole area out grey or make it look dusty instead of lit. Getting the undertone right is the single biggest lever for whether highlighter looks like skin or looks like it's sitting on top of skin.

Quick undertone check

Look at the veins on the inside of your wrist in natural daylight:

  • Greenish veins → warm undertone
  • Bluish or purple veins → cool undertone
  • A mix, or hard to tell → neutral/olive undertone

Not confident from that alone? Our Find Your Shade quiz cross-checks undertone against your foundation match in under a minute, and the same undertone logic carries straight over to highlighter.

Warm undertones: reach for Bronze or Gawld

Warm undertones carry golden, peachy, or reddish depth underneath the skin, and warm-toned highlighters sit with that depth instead of fighting it. In the My TFace – Lite As Air Powder Highlighter line, Bronze and Gawld are built for this, a rich, sun-warmed shimmer that reads as genuine glow rather than a layer of product. Want the same warmth in a dewier, liquid finish? Liquid Light – Pinkalicious carries that same warm, rosy depth.

Cool undertones: reach for Pearl or Coco Light

Cool undertones carry pink, red, or blue depth. A warm bronze or gold shade on cool-undertoned deep skin can look muddy or orange against the skin instead of lifted. Pearl and Coco Light from the same My TFace line lean cooler and brighter, giving lift without pulling the skin warm.

Neutral or olive undertones: reach for Yummy

If your veins read as a toss-up between green and blue, or you have an olive cast, you have more flexibility than most, but a true neutral shade still looks the most natural. Yummy splits the difference between warm and cool without leaning hard either way, making it the easiest single shade to start with if you're not sure yet.

⭐ Shop this: match your undertone, not just your foundation shade

The My TFace – Lite As Air Powder Highlighter comes in multiple shades, including Pearl, Coco Light, Bronze, Gawld, and Yummy, so you can match your undertone exactly instead of guessing off a shade name alone. Leaning warm and want a liquid option too? Liquid Light – Pinkalicious follows the same undertone logic in a dewier formula. If you haven't nailed your undertone yet, run the Find Your Shade quiz first, it takes less time than returning the wrong shade.

What if you still can't tell your undertone?

Try the shade on your jawline, not the back of your hand, skin tone and undertone can both shift slightly between the two. Warm shades should look like your skin "lit from within"; cool shades should look crisp and bright without turning the surrounding skin orange. If a shade looks like it's sitting in a separate layer on top of your skin rather than blending into it, it's the wrong undertone, not the wrong formula.

The bottom line

Warm goes with Bronze or Gawld. Cool goes with Pearl or Coco Light. Neutral or olive goes with Yummy. Getting the undertone right matters more for highlighter than for almost any other product in your routine, because there's nowhere for a mismatch to hide.
