What "oxidation" actually means
Oxidation is a chemical reaction. When your foundation meets air, the natural oils on your skin, and warmth, some of its ingredients react and darken. The shade you applied slowly deepens — often pulling orange or grey — over the first few hours of wear.
It's the same idea as a sliced apple going brown. Nothing is wrong with your skin. The formula is simply reacting to everything you put it up against.
Why deep and melanin-rich skin sees it worst
Oxidation shows up on every skin tone, but it's most obvious on deep skin for a few reasons:
- Warm and red undertones amplify the shift. When a foundation darkens, it usually pulls orange — and on already-warm deep skin that orange reads loud and fast.
- Oilier zones speed it up. More natural oil means a stronger reaction, and many deep skin types carry more oil through the T-zone.
